Almond walkathon to be held Saturday

Almond Elementary School has scheduled its annual Walkabout fund-raiser, “Groove your feet to the Almond beat,” 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday. The PTA-sponsored event gives students a chance to help their school by raising funds with their walking. The PTA uses the funds to buy classroom and library books, art supplies and instruction, music instruction, computers, technology instruction and other items to complement the school budget.

Public can decode learning differences

Los Altos Christian School has scheduled a workshop in which participants can learn what it is like to have a learning disability 7 p.m., March 14, in Room 620 of Burkhart Hall, on the campus, 625 Magdalena Ave. The International Dyslexia Association is sponsoring simulations to help interested individuals develop new patience and compassion for bright children with auditory processing difficulties, dyslexia, fine motor delays and non-verbal disabilities.

The public is welcome to attend the free workshop. For more information, call the school office at 948-3738.

Her talk will include information on the key aspects to multilingual success. The school is located at 505 Escuela Ave., Mountain View.

To reserve a place, call the school office at 526-3590.

The Stanford Blood Center will administer the drive. The Stanford Blood Center is the largest supplier to five local hospitals, including Stanford, Lucille Packard Children’s, El Camino, O’Connor and the Veteran’s Hospital. Rumpelstiltskin rocks at St. Andrew’s School

Can straw really be spun into gold? Not until Rumpelstiltskin casts his spell and makes life rough for a certain princess-in-training. “Rumpelstiltskin, A Rock and Roll Musical” is St. Andrew’s School’s musical retelling of the fairytale with a rock ‘n’ roll twist. It was adapted by Shauna McGuiness of Children’s Theatre.

Appropriate for all ages, the show is full of great singing and dancing by humorous fairytale characters. You’ll meet goblins, fairies, forest animals, people of the kingdom and of course sly Rumpelstiltskin.

Third- through eighth-grade students will sing “I Wanna Talk About Me,” “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” “Hit The Road Jack” and many more rockin’ hits. The show’s cast of 55 children have been working on the production for five weeks.

Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m., March 18-19, and 2 p.m., March 19. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the school. For more information, call (408) 867-3785. St. Andrew’s School is located at 13601 Saratoga Ave., Saratoga.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
