Zimbabwe run scheduled for March 13

The sixth annual “Run for Zimbabwe Orphans,” newly renamed the “Zimbabwe Run and Cultural Exhibit,” is scheduled to begin at noon, Sunday, at St. Joseph School, 1120 Miramonte Ave., Mountain View.

The run includes four levels of competition over dirt and grass for all ages and abilities. Ten runs are planned in 20-minute intervals, beginning at 12:30 p.m. with a half-mile run for kindergartners. First- through eighth-graders, high school students and adults can compete in one-mile runs in their separate divisions.

The run benefits AIDS orphans living in Makumbi Children’s Home in Zimbabwe. The entry cost is $5 per person. Entry blanks and contribution forms are available online at www.ZimbabweParaguay.org. For more information, call 941-9206.

The Easter bunny coming to downtown

The Los Altos Village Association has scheduled its annual Easter egg hunt and children’s party 9:30 a.m., March 19, in the Community Plaza, Main and State streets next to Citibank.

The Easter egg hunt is free and includes candy treats in eggs, some containing certificates for free prizes from local merchants. After the hunt, bunny ear hat-making, face painting, a jellybean guessing contest and candy tasting is planned.

Local magician Hank Vlcek, “The Master of Mystifying Magic,” will perform at 10:15 a.m.

Children, 1 to 6, will hunt for eggs hidden in front of stores on Main Street, children, 7 to 10, on State Street.

American Legion crab feed

American Legion Post 558 and the Order of the Scrumptious Crab presents a “Crustacean Delectables Crab Feed” 5 p.m., Saturday, at Post Hall, located at First and Whitney streets, Los Altos.

Cost is $25 per person, at the door. The meal includes crab, salad, bread and wine. No-host bar begins 4 p.m.

Dinner is served at 5 p.m. Proceeds benefit Legion projects.

Harpist performs in Los Altos

Renowned harpist Louise Trotter will perform a concert of favorite classics, pops, rag and country and western music, 8 p.m., Friday, at the Los Altos Union Presbyterian Church, 858 University Ave.

Suggested donation is $10 to benefit the 2006 American Harp Society convention in San Francisco.

Ukranian eggs subject of class

Gosia Hoot will give a class on the art of creating Ukranian eggs noon to 4 p.m., March 19, at Union Presybeterian Church in Los Altos.

The instructor, who has been creating such eggs since she was a child, described the traditional art as putting a stained glass window on an egg. Although its history predates Christianity, Ukranian eggs have become popular to make during the 40 days of Lent.

Artists typically paint religious symbols from crosses to the star of Bethlehem. Hoot describes the art as inexpensive and fun. The class fee is an $18 donation, which goes mostly to supplies. For more information, call Hoot at (408) 379-3124.

Stegner tribute at history museum

The Los Altos History Museum is housing the largest retrospective to date covering the life and influence of Wallace Stegner, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, teacher and environmentalist, “Wallace Stegner: Throwing a Long Shadow.”

The admission-free exhibit is open to the public noon to 4 p.m., Thursdays through Sundays, through June 12.

The exhibit includes a comprehensive pictorial timeline, a re-creation of Stegner’s home study with personal artifacts, prizes and awards; a section profiling his important environmental contributions; a special children’s section; and interactive audio and video stations.

Linden Tree presents ‘World Stories with Njeri’

“World Stories with Njeri,” a monthly series, is scheduled 11-11:45 a.m., the second Saturday of each month through May, at Linden Tree Children’s Recordings & Books in downtown Los Altos. Each session will feature storytelling, crafts, or puppetry and is appropriate for children of all ages. The next session is scheduled for Saturday.

Njeri McGillicuddy, longtime Waldorf School kindergarten teacher born in Kenya, Africa, will share her diverse cultural experiences and timeless stories.

‘Shakespeare & Love’ at Los Altos High School

Peninsula Symphony and American Conservatory Theater are joining forces to present “Shakespeare & Love” concerts. The two groups are also bringing condensed performances to Los Altos High School 12:25 p.m. and 1:15 p.m., March 17.

Director Giles Havergal will bring A.C.T. actors to perform sections from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Romeo and Juliet,” accompanied by a pianist playing excerpts of Mendelssohn’s music and Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet” ballet score. The student audience will see and hear the variable interpretations of romantic themes by the composers and Shakespeare.

These shows will prepare them for the full symphonic/theatrical performance March 19 at the Flint Center in Cupertino.

The Los Altos Community Foundation has given a grant in support of the Los Altos High concerts.

Red Cross offers CPR Saturday

Residents can get CPR training for free during a CPR Saturday event put on by the Palo Alto Area Red Cross. The event is set for this Saturday at Cubberley Community Center, 4000 Middelfield Road, Palo Alto.

The event is offered to teach people such lifesaving skills as rescue breathing, recognizing the symptoms of a heart attack and stroke, performing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and clearing the airway of a choking victim.

Sessions are scheduled 8 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m. A “First Aid Basics” session also is scheduled 1-5 p.m. You must have taken the morning CPR course to register for this class. There is a $20 fee.

City Easter egg hunt offers variety of activities

The Los Altos Recreation Department and the Los Altos Library will be hosting a variety of activities at the city’s annual Easter Egg hunt 9:45 a.m., March 26, at the Hillview Soccer Field, 97 Hillview Ave.

Activities include a guessing jar contest, coloring and a special appearance by Mr. Fun E. Bunny.

The egg hunt will be held at 10 a.m. sharp and will be held by age groups: walking to 5 years, 5 to 7 years and 8 to 10 years.

The main Los Altos Library will host spring and nature stories for school-age children with Ane Carla Rovetta at 10:20 a.m. in the Program Room.

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
