ACT deadline near for April 9 test
The registration deadline for the next ACT assessment is Friday; the testing date is April 9. The late registration postmark deadline is March 18. An additional fee is required for late registration.
The ACT assessment comprises four tests: English, reading, math and science. New this year is an optional writing test. Many colleges will require writing scores from students matriculating in fall 2006. Students should check the database on the ACT Web site or the admissions requirements of colleges they are considering before deciding whether to register for the assessment with or without the writing test. The writing test adds 30 minutes to the regular three-hour testing time. The assessment costs $42 with the writing test and $28 without.
Students can obtain registration information from their school counselors or register on ACT’s Web site, www.actstudent.org.

MVHS to offer speech class this fall
MVHS will house the district’s first speech class next year, taught by Matthew Abrahams, a teacher at De Anza College and a former competitor and assistant speech coach at Leland High School. The fall semester offering will be a public speaking class. In the spring, that class will add an as-yet-unspecified component.
LAHS students may also enroll in the class. All students taking the class must pay De Anza’s enrollment fee; they will receive community college credit for completing the class.
