Tara Chandra, singing the role of Mercedes, one of Carmen’s Gypsy friends, hopes the tarot cards tell her a handsome lover is in her future. |
Two Los Altos teens will help bring opera to town this week. Tara Chandra, who attends The Harker School in San Jose, and Monica McCann, a student at Homestead High School in Cupertino, are members of Peninsula Teen Opera, which will present a program of opera and operetta in English, 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m., Sunday, in the Eagle Theatre, 201 Almond Ave.
“Gianni Schicchi,” Giacomo Puccini’s comic one-acter about money, marriage and greed - and the double-crossers who make it all come out right - will be the centerpiece of the evening.
Tara will sing the physician in “Gianni Schicchi,” a role that has been transposed an octave up the scale for her, as well as Mercedes, in a scene from Georges Bizet’s “Carmen.” Monica will sing Kate in “Pirates of Penzance” and Jenny in “Down in the Valley.” The company also will perform scenes from “Don Giovanni,” “The Marriage of Figaro,” “The Merry Widow,” “Luisa Fernanda” and other works.
Seating will be general admission. Tickets are $15, $10 for seniors and students under age 18. Contact the Peninsula Teen Opera box office at (408) 226-9673, (408) 504-6438 or info@teenopera.org for more information.
Thirty-three teens participate in Peninsula Teen Opera’s fall program. Former opera singers Allen and Hiltrud Cathcart and their staff of professional musicians teach talented teenagers 13 to 19 to sing and perform some of the great operas and operettas of all time.
