Volunteers sought for traffic program

Officer Brent Butler of the Los Altos Police Department is looking for a few good neighbors of Almond Elementary or Los Altos High school to operate the Citizen Radar program. Volunteers are needed for the 7:30-8:30 a.m. and 2:30-3:30 p.m. school commute shifts.

Santa Rita schedules Scholastic Book Fair

Santa Rita Elementary School has scheduled a Scholastic Book Fair through Saturday. This PTA-sponsored event features popular books and educational products for all ages, including the newest titles, award winners, classics and interactive products from more than 150 publishers. The community is invited to attend. Proceeds will benefit the Santa Rita library.

The fair will be held in the school’s multipurpose room from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday. A special family event, with stories read aloud by teachers, activities and refreshments, will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. today.

Santa Rita is located at 700 Los Altos Avenue.

Education foundation needs volunteers

The Los Altos Education Foundation plans to sell glow necklaces 5-7 p.m., Nov. 28, prior to the Festival of Lights Parade, to raise funds for the Los Altos School District. Volunteers are needed to sell the necklaces on the streets in downtown Los Altos or to manage inventory for the sale.

Bullis Charter School enrolling for 2005-2006

Open enrollment for Bullis Charter School’s 2005-2006 school year is taking place through Jan. 4, 2005. For instructions and registration forms, logon to www.bullischarterschool.com. Parents needing more information are invited to open houses at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 15 and Dec. 7, in the school’s multipurpose room. No reservations are required.

Four school tours have also been scheduled: at 9:30 a.m., Nov. 17; 11 a.m., Nov. 19; 9:30 a.m., Dec. 8; and 11 a.m., Dec. 10. To reserve a spot on a tour, call 947-4939.

Bullis Charter School is a tuition-free public school serving families in Los Altos Hills, Los Altos and surrounding areas. It is located at 102 W. Portola Ave., Los Altos, on the Egan Junior High School campus.

Bullis Charter schedules Scholastic Book Fair

Bullis Charter School is scheduled to hold a Scholastic Book Fair, open to the public, Nov. 29 through Dec. 2. Hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, with an additional two hours Nov. 30, 6:30-8:30 p.m. The fair will help raise funds for the school. It will feature specially priced books, including award-winning titles, children’s classics and current best sellers.

Homestead High School to hold 10-year reunion

Homestead High School alumni have scheduled their 10-year reunion 7-11 p.m., Nov. 27, at Tied House, 945 Villa St., Mountain View. Cost is $40 per person. To register, logon to www.homestead94reunion.com.

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
