Lt. Cmdr. Malachy D. Sandie

received a master’s of arts degree in national security and strategic studies from the College of Naval Command and Staff at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. The son of William G. and Celine Sandie of Los Altos, he graduated from St. Francis High School in 1986 and received a bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., in 1990.

Army Maj. Brian M. Kane

has deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II.

During Operation Iraqi Freedom II, U.S. armed forces members and coalition forces’ operational mission objectives are focused on peacekeeping, stabilization, security and counter-insurgency operations as the Iraqi Governing Council assumes full sovereign powers to govern the peoples of Iraq.

Kane, an assistant chief of staff, is the son of Judy Kane of Winter Park, Fla. His wife, Heidi, is the daughter of Rainer Schulz of Cuesta Drive, Los Altos, and Maureen Schulz of Fremont. The major is a 1986 graduate of the University of Florida, Gainesville.

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
