A golf tournament in memory of well-loved Los Altos resident Rick Bell will be held Oct. 11 at Los Altos Golf and Country Club, 1560 Country Club Drive.

Organized by Carol Millie, Marge Sentous, Rich Fischer, Mona Armistead, Gene Ashley, Gunilla Follett, John Mason, Laurie Richard, Steve Shepherd, LeAnn Stroy and Rick Williams, the tournament is dedicated to the energy and love of life that Bell personified.

Contributions to the tournament will go to the donor-advised Richard G. Bell Memorial Scholarship Fund, established by Bell’s sons Geoffrey and Stephen and managed by the Los Altos Community Foundation.

Every year, a student or students with profiles similar to Bell’s (a graduate of Los Altos High School and from a family of modest means) will receive college scholarship grants. The scholarships will allow students to attend one of the schools in the University of California, the California State University or the community college system.

Scholarships will be awarded by Bell’s sons; Duncan King, Bell’s former law partner at Finch, Sauers, Player and Bell; Bob Crumb, Bell’s best friend and the director of human resources for Bechtel Corp.; Mary Mason, a Foothill-De Anza Community College District trustee; Steve Shepherd, an LACF board member; and Mona Armistead, a licensed family therapist.

The tournament is a “shotgun” - foursomes will tee off at each of the 18 holes at the same time. Registration starts at 10 a.m., and tee off is at 12:30 p.m.

At last! A competitive MVLA election

Back in 1998, Silicon Valley was the new gold rush, Google was in its infancy and the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District held its last competitive school board election.
