City plans delays, not cuts, in face of budget crunch

Bay Area cities are initiating layoffs, cutting services and planned projects and, in a handful of cases, considering bankruptcy in the face of plummeting revenue this fall. The city of Los Altos is not immune to the decrease in tax dollars but has dodged a major drop due to the relatively stable local housing market.

“The municipal organization is in pretty good shape considering the international financial problems and especially compared to other public agencies,” Los Altos City Manager Doug Schmitz said.

The annual Festival of Lights Parade heralded the arrival of the holiday season, attracting thousands of parade-goers to downtown Los Altos Sunday night as Main and State streets transformed into a magical dream world for children and adults alike.

The weather fully cooperated as a crowd of approximately 21,550 assembled along the festively decorated streets to celebrate “A Child’s Holiday Fantasy.” The turnout was nearly 2,700 more than last year, according to Los Altos Amateur Radio Emergency Services.

R. Alan Hwang/Special to Town Crier Mustangs upset top seed in DI

The long bus ride to Grass Valley for the Northern California Division I semifinals turned out to be a good thing for the Homestead High girls volleyball team.

The 3 1/2-hour drive only fueled the Mustangs’ desire to beat top seed Nevada Union, which knocked them off in last year’s regional final.

special to the town Crier Holiday Fund profiles: Help One Child, Career Closet and Jeremiah’s Promise

The Town Crier Holiday Fund collects financial donations every year to benefit area non-profit organizations that serve those in need. This year 18 organizations will receive support from the fund, including three groups, profiled below, that help local children and adults through tough transition times. Jeremiah’s Promise

Volunteers and staff at Jeremiah’s Promise provide a transitional home for young women who are “aging out” of the foster-care system. At age 18, young adults find themselves without family or resources to rely on when they leave the system and are at high risk of homelessness or entering the prison system.

Special to the Town Crier Jack Nicklaus design makes the tournament course a star

This is the 11th in a series of articles ranking, in descending order, the top 20 public golf courses within easy reach of Los Altos.

Coyote Creek Golf Course’s two courses, located just off U.S. 101, south of San Jose, are owned and operated by David Murdock’s Castle & Cook Golf Properties. I ranked the Valley Course No. 14 in an April review. The better-known Tournament Course, which I rank No. 10, opened with a bang in 1999, hosting the PGA Senior Tour (now called the Champion’s Tour) Siebel Open. Jack Nicklaus was a star participant, as he designed the course and made sure it got a proper christening. The tournament was repeated in 2000 and 2001.
