Some local motorists may find themselves on a felons list for public review this holiday season. The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office is publishing the names and descriptions of those wanted for DUI-related felony charges on the Sheriff’s Crime Target list as part of the county’s annual “Avoid the 13″ holiday crackdown on drinking and driving, which began Friday.
This is the first time the sheriff’s office has included this type of crime on its published wanted list.
“This crime seemed fitting to target with the holiday season among us. (It’s) another tool to place the public on notice of what exactly some people are doing while driving on our roads,” a sheriff’s spokesman said.
The list includes each alleged felon’s name, photo, description and criminal charges. Only those with outstanding, no-bail DUI felony warrants are included on the list, which is divided into two categories: felony warrants involving DUI accidents with injury or hit-and-run; and felony warrants involving individuals with multiple DUIs. There were 21 names on the sheriff’s list last week.
In Los Altos, police are scheduled to conduct a sobriety checkpoint from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., Saturday and Sunday, on San Antonio Road and Hawthorne Avenue. The 20-day sobriety campaign is scheduled to run through Jan. 2.
Police reported a sharp decline in the number of drunken drivers during last year’s campaign.
The 16 police agencies participating in last year’s campaign arrested 810 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol compared with 850 during the same holiday crackdown in 2001.
San Jose police reported 291 drunk-driving arrests, the highest number of all agencies. Los Altos reported the fewest with seven arrests compared with 12 the previous year.
The Crime Target list is maintained by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and will be updated regularly. To view wanted drivers, logon to www. sccsheriff.org.
