YAMADA, Masaye Uriu,
Following her husband’s death in 1975, Masaye became an enthusiastic amateur photographer, went back to college, and in her late 60s graduated from San Francisco State with a B.A. degree in Japanese language and culture. She was a second mother to many of her fellow students, enjoying photography field trips and their friendship and fellowship. She subsequently tutored students in English as a second language and mentored students from Japan. She studied brush painting, tea ceremony, koto, and Ikebana. She also enjoyed gardening and attending the opera.
Masaye moved to Dallas, Texas in 1995 to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She and her daughter built a house together so that Masaye could live with family. In her last 5 years, Masaye suffered a series of progressive health problems, through which she proved wonderfully resilient, adjusting gracefully to each new setback. Throughout her final months and years, she remained fun-loving and cheerful, sharing much laughter and forming bonds of love and friendship with her excellent caregivers Linda Macias and Carmen Hernandez, and winning the affection of all who came to know her.
Masaye was preceded in death by her husband Paul Yamada, her brother Isamu, and sister Tomiko. She is survived by her son Kenneth, daughter Joyce, her brothers Kiyoto, Masashi, Dale, Stanley, Clarence, her sisters Mitsuko, Fumiko, Haruye, and by numerous nephews and nieces, of whom she was very fond.
The Memorial Service will be at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 4243 Manuela Avenue, Palo Alto on Saturday, October 4 at 2:00 P.M. She is survied by her four sons; Todd of New Orleans, LA, Tom of Denver, CO, Tim of Los Altos, CA and Trent of Sunnyvale, CA; her brother John Clark and two sisters Jane Parker and Ann Auskings of Mt. Vernon, OH; two grandsons and several nieces and nephews; her husband, a TWA Captain, Roy Thrush; brothers Ralph and Charles Clark and sister Mildred Ewalt died previously.
Services will be held at Spangler Mortuaries in Los Altos at 12:00 noon on Friday, September 26. Donations can be sent to the United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Ave., Los Altos, CA 94024.
