CLEAL, Jr., Oscar William,

In the hope that this could not happen again, Captain Cleal was one of the first to counsel congressional committees, law-enforcement agencies, and the Airline Pilots Assn. with urgent recommendations for bulletproofing cockpits, keeping cockpit doors locked and installing the doors with peepholes; teaching the pilots judo and furnishing them with handcuffs to restrain violent passengers - AND arming the pilots.

Before this first domestic skyjacking, Mr. Cleal had been working on the airline’s retirement committee and as soon as he was able he studied economics, finance, and all facets of the securities business at Menlo College, as well as from books transcribed by the Recordings for the Blind and was able to pass the necessary examinations and went to work, as a registered stockbroker specializing in retirement and pension plans. This second career was successful and for almost forty years he was able to help many airline retirement committees.

Born in Buffalo, New York, Oscar has been a resident of Los Altos for the past 25 years.

Surviving Mr. Cleal are his wife, Ann; two children, son Lindsay and daughter Wendy from a previous marriage to Evelyn Brown. Also surviving are two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Private service was held.

MATHEWS, James C.,

He is survived by his wife, Marie, sons, James, Jr. and William; and brother, Stanley.

Jim was a graduate of Florence High School. He was an infantry Captain in the Pacific Campaign in World War II and was in combat in Okinawa. He was an employee of Pacific Gas & Electric Company for 32 years and, in his retirement, an avid golfer as a member and president of the Shoreline Seniors.

At his request, there will be no services. Interment will be at the San Joaquin Veterans Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, El Camino, Mountain View, CA, or the charity of your choice.

HERFURTH, William “Bill”,

Born June 2, 1930 in Oakland, CA. Bill raised his family and spent most of his extensive career in Mountain View, CA, retiring to Chico, CA 10 years ago.

Bill will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by many. He was a man of character and integrity. He was successful in his 28-year career with the Xerox Corporation and as Mayor of Mountain View, CA. He was admired as a loving husband, father and grandfather.

After retiring, Bill could often be seen admiring the beauty, or listening to the sounds of nature in Butte Creek Canyon. While at his summer home in Lake Almanor he could be found watching nature at its best, or feeding peanuts to his blue jay pal. He enjoyed golf, fishing, tinkering in his workshop, and many televised sports. He had a particular soft spot for Ice Skating, the Indy 500 and the San Francisco 49ers. Bill was the loving husband and best friend of Alberta for over 53 years; father of Susan Schramm and her husband Phil, Douglas Herfurth and his wife Gaylen, Lee Herfurth and his wife Alyn, and Sandra Shaughnessy; grandfather to ten grandchildren; brother of Jay Koberle and her husband Herman; brother-in-law to Chester Piepenburg and his wife Chris; and countless lifelong friends.

The memorial services wereheld at the beautiful Centerville Cemetery on Centerville Rd in Butte Creek Canyon, Chico, on Saturday, August 30th at 1:00pm. A reception will follow at the family home. Reverend Greg Cootsona of Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian Church, and Halleine Morrison, longtime

friend and wife of their dear minister Bob Morrison, will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to Enloe Hospice or to the Centerville Recreation & Historical Association in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home, 680 Camellia Way, Chico, CA 95926.
