SCHNITKER, Edward August,

Ed was twelve years old in 1918 when his father contracted influenza during the epidemic that year, and died a few weeks later. His mother Minnie never remarried and supported the family by taking a job as a cook at a local school cafeteria.

After graduating from high school, Ed attended the University of Toledo for two years and completed his degree in Civil Engineering at Purdue University. A high school teacher saw the potential for a higher education in Ed and loaned him the money to attend Purdue, where he joined the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Those were special times for Ed and he was a lifelong supporter of the “Boilermakers”.

Ed planned for a career in Agricultural Extension after graduating from Purdue but there were few jobs during the depression, so he took a job with the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics at Langley Field in Hampton Virginia. In Hampton Ed met and fell in love with a local school teacher, Elizabeth Irene Shepherd, and they married in 1932.

In 1940, Ed was transferred from Langley Field to Moffett Field in Mountain View, California, being one of the first 50 employees at the facility, where he worked until he retired in 1964. Ed headed up the drafting department and later worked in the budget office. It was during those early years that Ed

helped design and oversee the building of the world’s largest wind tunnel at the time at the Ames Research Center. After thirty-five years at NACA / NASA, Ed retired and he and Betsy enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world and especially to visit family in Virginia. Ed built a cabin in the Santa Cruz Mountains, which became a favorite spot to relax and enjoy times with family and friends.

Ed was very involved in volunteer activities including United Way and the Boy Scouts of America. He was a troop leader for twenty years and earned the Silver Beaver Award for his outstanding leadership with the Scouts. Ed was a member of Mountain View Rotary Club for 62 years, where he was Secretary/Treasurer for many years and he helped establish a foundation to fund scholarships for local high school students. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 64 years and a charter member of the local chapter of SIRS. Ed was also honored for being the Citizen of the Year by the City of Mountain View. Ed and Betsy enjoyed their long time membership of the Los Altos United Methodist Church, and the numerous friends they met and worshiped with there.

Ed and Betsy had two daughters, Elizabeth Kay born in January 1936 and Carol Anne born in June 1945, both of whom followed in the footsteps of their mother and became teachers.

Kay married Charles Rockhold in 1956 and had three children, Steven, Stuart and Linda. Ed and Betsy enjoyed their three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren immensely.

McAULAY, Margaret Dabbel,

Born in Sonoma, CA, September 9, 1912, she attended schools there and graduated from the University of California in Berkeley. After completing a degree in Librarianship, also at UC Berkeley, she worked in public libraries in Palo Alto and Redwood City until her marriage to William Hatton McAulay. They settled first in San Carlos; the family moved to Woodside in 1956 and finally to Los Altos Hills in 1965.

Long interested in residential design, landscape architecture and home decoration, she obtained her real estate license in 1969 and enjoyed helping many people find their new homes in a successful career as a realtor with Cornish and Carey, Los Altos, until retirement in 1995.

She is survived by her children, Richard of Los Altos Hills and Tamsin of Pacific Grove, and by her daughter-in-law Anita and her grandson Thomas.

NELSON, Frederick R., 84 “Ray”

He is survived by his sisters Rachel Shreck, Jamestown, NY, Norma Mitchell, Stowe, NY and his sons James, Thornton, CO, John, Honolulu, HA, and Jeff, Los Altos, CA.

He lived with his son Jeff, daughter in-law Diane and Granddaughters Patricia, Pamela, Julie and Stacy. Until recently Ray loved his walk to downtown for his coffee and groceries.
