DOZIER, Virginia Parker,
A native of Emporia, Virginia, she came to California in 1954 with her husband, James Hoyt Dozier , a naval officer, and their children. During her husband’s military career, the family moved several times within the United States and California before settling in Los Altos in 1959.
From early childhood, education was her love and inspiration. She obtained her B.A. in Latin, Summa Cum Laude, from Westhampton College at the University of Richmond, Richmond Virginia, in 1942. She obtained her Masters Degree in Latin from Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina in 1943.
She taught Latin, English grammar, and Spanish at Mountain view High School and Los Altos High School for over 18 years. A passionate and dedicated educator, she is remembered by her students as the teacher always available to spend extra time with those needing help. Following her retirement in 1979, and continuing until her most recent hospitalization, she tutored high school students in Latin without pay. For the past 20 years, her Latin pupils consistently ranked high on the nationwide Latin Exam.
She is survived by her husband, James Hoyt Dozier of Los Altos, and four children, James H. Dozier, Jr. of Salinas, John P. Dozier of Cupertino, Joseph W. Dozier of Los Altos and Janet Dozier Shannon of Poway,CA. She is also survived by her brother Jack Parker of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, ten grandchildren and 3 great grand children.
A memorial service was held Sunday, July 20, 2003 at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Mountain View,1667 Miramonte Ave., Mountain View. Arrangements under the direction of the Los Altos Chapel of Spangler Mortuaries, 399 So. San Antonio Road,Los Altos. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the University of Richmond, Dept. of Classical Studies, Box 91700, Richmond,VA 23173.
