The Mountain View High softball team got even with rival Los Altos last week, eking out a 1-0 road win.

The Spartans, who lost to the Eagles earlier in the year, scored on a double by Ashlee Choi in the fourth inning of the SCVAL De Anza Division game April 29.

Alyssa Robbins earned the victory, pitching a four-hitter with seven strikeouts. She outdueled Los Altos star Alyce Jorgensen, who pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Los Altos bounced back on Thursday with an 8-0 rout of Monta Vista, improving to 6-2 in the division. That same day, Lynbrook edged Mountain View 2-1, sinking the Spartans to 3-6.

Swimming and diving

Both Mountain View teams ended their league seasons undefeated and set several records at last Friday’s SCVAL El Camino Division championship meet.

The girls won eight of the 12 events, setting five league marks. The Spartans tallied 544 points; host Lynbrook was second (442).

Brooke Bishop paced Mountain View, winning the 50-yard freestyle (23.30 seconds) and 100 butterfly (56.24) in league-record times. Her 50 free time replaced Mountain View alum Marie Marsman’s mark (23.99), coach Ben Murray said. Bishop also led off the 200 free relay (1:41.85) and 400 free relay (3:45.86), which set new league standards, too. Diver Sonia Menchavez also set a league record, posting a score of 333.55.

The boys’ meet proved much closer, with Mountain View squeezing by Lynbrook 430-421.

The Spartans won six events, three in meet-record times. Mike Kasper defended his titles in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, while Fred Tran beat his personal records in the 100 fly (54.37) and 100 backstroke (54.60). The team of Steven Quistad, Kasper, Tran and Tyler Landrith won the 200 medley relay in a near-record time and later set the mark in the 400 free relay (3:21.77).

Boys tennis

Pinewood’s Niki Ofa defeated teammate Vishal Natarajan 6-1, 6-4 to claim the singles title of last week’s Private Schools Athletic League Individual Tournament. Pinewood’s Edgar Perez and Alex Tolchin won the doubles title with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Harker’s Wesley Wu and Eric Liu. The winners qualify for the CCS Individual Tournament, set for May 27 and 28.

Baseball

Mountain View remained a game back of El Camino Division-leading Los Altos with a 2-1 home win over Santa Clara last Thursday. Todd Frassetti, who relieved starter Erik Davis in the seventh, earned the win. Matt Means had two hits and an RBI for the Spartans (10-4, 19-4).

Track and field

Los Altos split its De Anza Division meet at Los Gatos last Thursday. The Los Altos boys prevailed 76-37; Los Gatos beat the Los Altos girls 72-45.

The Eagles had four double-winners on the boys’ side: Taff Dirks in the mile (4:38) and two-mile (10:05) runs; Eric Cheng in the 110-meter hurdles (15.8) and 300 hurdles (42.2); Justin Greco in the 200 (24.2) and 400 (53.2) runs; and Leonard D’Elia in the long jump (19 feet, 4 inches) and triple jump (37-10). Royce Hurd won the 100 dash (11.6).

For the Los Altos girls, winners included Allie Miller in the 100 hurdles (16.3), Katy Jones in the 100 dash (12.8), Amy Tong in the discus (89-3), Laura Battle in the shot put (29-9), and Andrea Cummings in the long jump (14-10).

The Mountain View track program “ended the season with a bang,” coach Sam Read said, sweeping Fremont last Thursday in its final dual meet. The boys won 69-44 and the girls 93-23 in El Camino Division competition.

Highlights for the boys included Alex Adams winning both the 110 hurdles (17.53) and 400 run (57.92), and Eric Donovan capturing the discus with a new school record of 120-3.

For the girls, Laurie Russo claimed both the 100 hurdles (17.28) and 300 hurdles (51.78), while Fara Husain ran the two-mile in a school-record 12:31.05.

Golf

Los Altos freshman Charlie Sines qualified for this week’s CCS Regional by shooting a 73 at last week’s SCVAL competition at Ridgmark Country Club.

Gymnastics

St. Francis routed Los Altos 182.60-138.10 on April 29. The Lancers’ Courtney Sinclair won the all-around title with a 37.55; Los Altos’ Jenna Yamaguma finished third (36.4).

Badminton

In Our Opinion

Editorial

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
