After a five month national search to find a chancellor for the Foothill-De Anza Community College District, the board of trustees announced the four finalists.

Two of the candidates presently work for the district: Foothill College President Bernadine Fong and De Anza College President Martha Kanter; the other two are Joe D. May, president of the Colorado Community College System, and Yolanda Moss, president of the American Association for Higher Education in Washington, D.C.

The finalists will visit the district next week to participate in open forums scheduled on both campuses, and to meet with the board of trustees.

Faculty staff, students and community members are invited to attend the forums regardless of campus designation to ask the candidates questions.

The board will announce its selection next month.

After acting as vice president for instruction and student services at Foothill for 11 years, Fong has served as president for nine. She has a doctorate in administration and policy analysis in higher education from Stanford University.

Kanter has been president of De Anza College for 10 years. She served three as vice president of instruction and student services at San Jose City College and three years as vice chancellor of policy analysis and research for the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office before joining De Anza. Kanter holds a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of San Francisco.

Prior to his three years in the Colorado system presidency, May served nine years as president of Pueblo Community College in Pueblo, Colo. He holds a doctorate from Texas A&M University.

Moses has held her current position since 2000. Previously, she was president of the City College of the City University of New York for six years. She holds a doctorate in anthropology from the University of California at Riverside.

Mary Mason, president of the board of trustees, chaired the chancellor search committee. The 13-members, composed of faculty, staff, administrators, a student and two community members, recommended the finalists following an extensive recruitment, screening and interview process.

The search committee was activated after former Chancellor Leo Chavez resigned to become executive vice president of the Community Foundation Silicon Valley.
