Gregory Naumann and his twin brothers, Michael and Bradley, sit in the kitchen playing Yu Gi Oh! cards while they wait for their mother to drive them to Pinewood School. Their father, Alan, plans to work at home this morning and checks in with his San Jose office while their mother Masami wipes the kitchen granite before they leave for school. That’s a typical early morning in the life of the Naumann family of Los Altos Hills.

Their 7,900-square-foot home was built for family living, and the Naumann family members take full advantage of it. It has five bedrooms, four full and two half baths, on 1.5 acres.

“I love the peaceful setting, with trees on all four sides, especially the 100-plus-year-old white oak tree that surrounds the house,” Alan said. “I’m the CEO of a Silicon Valley software company and travel internationally. The peaceful setting relaxes me and recharges my emotional batteries.”

“I like the house for the children because every bit of the lot is usable,” Masami said. “We have a nice flat area where the kids learned to ride bicycles. As they grow older, they shoot baskets at the hoop.”

The children enjoy the open kitchen and congregate there mornings. Adjacent to the kitchen, the warm and cozy great room with its fireplace and grand piano is where they watch television. Alan’s office is close to the great room so he can be near the family.

Masami said all the rooms have speakers. “At Christmas time, music played in the great room resounds through the house,” she said. “I really enjoy Christmas time in this house.”

“The children are always close by, where I can see them,” Masami said. “Guess that’s why I love the kitchen so much.”

The Cooley family built the original ranch-style home during the 1950s. It was on the last lot sold in a large subdivision that featured a view of Palo Alto, the Stanford hills, the East Bay and, on a clear day, San Francisco. Nearby Edgerton Road is named after Edgerton Cooley.

When the Naumann family purchased the property in 1991, they lived in south Los Altos. The house was rebuilt as a split-level home without disturbing the footprint. It was completed in 1994, and the Naumanns moved into the house when the twins were a year old.

The living room of the old structure is now the master bedroom, which retained the same far-reaching view. A unique king-size Ralph Lauren bedroom set with large posters and matched linens dominates the room.

Michael Bolton, a Los Altos architect, drew up the plans. Alan said Bolton managed to include all their requirements for a family home without changing the existing footprint.

The downstairs area contains a media room, several bedrooms and a complete living area. When Alan realized some space was still available on the ground floor, he built a temperature-controlled 2,000-bottle wine cellar, contain mostly California wines from the Napa and Sonoma valleys.

The Naumanns’ daughter, Stefanie, home for spring break from the University of Oregon, said her friends loved the house when they came for pajama parties. “We would go downstairs because it was a place to hang out — away from the rest of the family.”

The media room is really a theater room, used by the children to watch their “Star Wars” movies. It serves as a dorm when they have sleepovers, so they can watch movies in their sleeping bags.

“The theater has a 100-inch screen. When you watch ‘Titanic,’ you feel as though you’re wading in the water,” Alan said. “With the surround sound and comfortable seating, the kids love to watch their movies at home.”

The Naumanns plan to move to Saratoga in the near future to be closer to their family. The Saratoga house has the same amenities as the Los Altos Hills property except for the home theater.

The Hills house will go on sale with Campi Properties.
