The hit-and-run driver who allegedly struck a 6-year-old Los Altos boy as he crossed Miramonte Avenue on his bicycle last month turned himself in to Los Altos Police March 11.
Retired Mountain View pediatrician George Kirn drove himself to the police station after receiving a letter informing him that District Attorney Diane Northway had issued a warrant for his arrest for felony hit-and-run.
Police booked and released Kirn, 79, on a $75,000 bond.
Police said Kirn struck the boy as he crossed Miramonte behind his father on Covington Road. The impact catapulted the boy onto the car’s hood.
A witness said Kirn stopped briefly before driving away.
The witness followed Kirn and tried to convince him to return to the scene. Kirn indicated that he would go back, but returned to his car and drove away, the witness said.
Police said they believe Kirn was aware that he had been involved in a collision when they interviewed him shortly after the accident.
The boy was taken to Stanford Hospital and later released with no injuries.
Kirn could face state prison if the judge decides to impose the most severe penalty.
Arraignment is set for April.
