In what may be a first for local football, four of the five area teams have qualified for the Central Coast Section playoffs.
Mountain View, St. Francis, Gunn and Homestead will play opening-round games this weekend.
Despite finishing third in the SCVAL El Camino Division, Mountain View has earned the fourth seed in the Division IV playoffs. The Spartans (8-2) host No. 5 San Mateo (6-4) at 1 p.m., Saturday.
Mountain View is coming off a 33-0 road rout of Monta Vista last Thursday in which quarterback Sean Manson completed 31 of his 34 passes for 304 yards and a score. Tariq Bright scored the Spartans’ four other touchdowns and rushed for 76 yards.
St. Francis has snagged the eighth and final spot in the Division III playoffs. The Lancers only went 5-5 during the regular season but qualified because of “power points.” Based on wins and quality of opponents, the CCS uses the power-point system to grant at-large playoff berths.
As the lowest seed, St. Francis must play at No. 1 Terra Nova (10-0) at 7 p.m., Friday.
For a recap of the Lancers’ league-finale loss to Bellarmine last Friday, see Page 36.
Gunn has also qualified in Division III, earning the fourth seed. The Titans (7-3) entertain No. 5 Aragon (6-4) at 1 p.m., Saturday.
Gunn concluded SCVAL De Anza Division play with a 40-19 home win over rival Palo Alto last Friday. The victory allowed Gunn to secure the De Anza’s third and final automatic CCS berth.
SCVAL El Camino Division champion Homestead (8-2) will compete in the Division II playoffs. The fourth-seeded Mustangs host No. 5 Oak Grove (7-3) at 7 p.m., Saturday, at Fremont High in Sunnyvale.
Homestead’s two losses came against teams in the upper De Anza Division, including Milpitas last Friday. Homestead fell 27-8 to the visiting Trojans.
