A high school hockey game ended in a brawl Nov. 6, sending one student to the hospital and another to jail.

Los Altos Police Sgt. John Hughmanick said a 14-year-old Los Altos High School student allegedly attacked another student with a field hockey stick over a disputed play in a hockey game held during a morning physical education class on campus.

Hughmanick said the teen repeatedly hit his 14-year-old classmate in the back with a hockey stick after the play ended.

The attacked teen suffered bruises and other minor injuries to his back and both arms, Hughmanick said. He was treated at El Camino Hospital.

Police arrested the other teen on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and booked him into the Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall in San Jose.

Brigitta Sarraf, associate superintendent of educational services at the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District, said the violation requires a recommendation of expulsion to the school board under the district’s educational code.

The board is the only body empowered to expel a student, she said. Members are scheduled to hold a hearing to decide the student’s fate.

“I cannot predict what the board will be doing, but the district pretty much has a zero tolerance policy in (bodily harm) matters and takes it very, very seriously,” she said.
