Two Los Altos banks robbed in less than 4 days

Los Altos banks were hit by two robberies in less than four days this past week.

A white male suspect robbed the Bank of the West, 176 Main St., Monday afternoon, getting away with an undisclosed amount of cash. Police said the suspect, described as 6-feet-1, wearing knee-length shorts and tennis shoes, gave a note to a bank teller demanding cash. The money was placed in a bag the suspect carried into the bank. He fled through the back of the building.

A desire for cleaner streets, meticulously maintained landscaping and better sidewalk upkeep could prompt the Los Altos City Council to create a downtown business improvement area or district that would generate a business tax for improved street maintenance.

Business and property owners met with the city’s new economic development coordinator Abby Veeser last week to discuss what service levels they would like to see improved and how to fund the increased maintenance.

Take a look at the downtown Los Altos storefronts. Check out the activity at Farm Fresh Produce and the pumpkin patch on Grant Road. Visit the Costume Bank on State Street. Halloween is very much in the air and people just can’t wait to celebrate.

“With 5-year-old twins and an eight year old, Halloween is almost as big as Christmas in my house,” said Los Altos Hills resident Vince Zunino. “My 5-year-old son, Tony, has been counting down the days for a week now - and his math has been surprisingly good.”

LAH council candidate pulls out of race, says he doesn’t want to be ‘Ralph Nader’

Los Altos Hills City Council candidate Steve Hubbell surprised supporters and opponents alike last week when he dropped out of the council race.

“I’m thinking of putting up a poster in polling places to let (voters) know I’m not running,” said the 51-year-old engineer. Hubbell said he decided to drop out because he felt his running would hurt the election chances of his preferred candidates, Breene Kerr and Dean Warshawsky.

Editorial

Editorial Yes on Measure H

We still feel that way and so do district supporters who are back again with the same proposal in next week’s election. It fell short of capturing a two-thirds majority needed the first time around.

Why support Measure H? It is simply the right thing to do.

Editorial State propositions on next week’s ballot: Just say no

At a time when we are all watching our pocketbooks, we’re looking at billions in debt if these well-meaning initiatives pass. This blow to the state’s staggering economy is something we don’t need.

The problem with all of them is that they are too broad and unfocused to do much good. The water bond initiative, for instance, calls for state and local system improvements for better drinking water, improvements to sewer and storm water systems to prevent beaches from pollution, and protections and restoration of coastal wetlands, fisheries and wildlife. The school bond initiative is equally broad, involving school structures from kindergarten through universities. Such issues need specifics and perhaps more regional focus. In the case of school bonds, individual districts should put their own facilities improvement initiatives before their own voters.

Editorial No Hubbell? We’ll take Warshawsky

That makes sense. Hubbell was on similar political ground with “Breene and Dean” - pro open space, anti-Town Hall mission design, pro off-road paths. But he wasn’t doing any campaigning. A vote for him would have been a vote against candidates running in pairs. Janet Vitu and Bill Kerns are seemingly running as a team against Kerr and Warshawsky.

With Hubbell out, we are changing our endorsement to Warshawsky. He hasn’t been in town long, but he stands for all the qualities we like about local candidates: a willingness to work hard and learn, commitment to the job and an ability to listen.

A recent town-wide survey on the proposed new town hall shows that an overwhelming majority (94%) of residents who responded oppose the current plan and favor a more affordable, less conspicuous design. I believe that most residents who responded were not “confused” in any way by the survey and expressed their opinion - well aware of the issues involved.

The current plan depends on at least $1.5 million in donations to be fully funded. So far only a small fraction of that amount has actually been pledged.

The call of the wild could be heard in Los Altos Hills last Saturday, thanks to the Wildlife Conservation Network.

Some of the world’s leading wildlife conservationists were on hand for WCN’s public debut with its Wildlife Expo at Foothill College. Actress and conservation advocate Isabella Rossellini also made an appearance at the inaugural event.

Schools

Egan named No. 1 jr. high school in state for third year in a row

Third time is a charm for Egan Junior High School. The Los Altos school has been named as the top junior high school in the state for the third year in a row, based on the state’s 2001-02 Academic Performance Index (API) Growth Reports.

Egan scored 933 out of a possible 1,000 points. The score, also called an index number, actually dropped 10 points from the previous year, but Egan was able to remain in the top slot.

Sports

Return sparks Spartans

In a span of 13 seconds, Los Altos High’s hopes of pulling off a football upset over rival Mountain View were dashed. That’s how long it took Mountain View’s Cody Himes to return a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown.

The game-turning run erased an early lead by the Eagles and catapulted the Spartans to a 32-13 league victory last Friday night at Foothill College. The win evened Mountain View’s record to 2-2 in the SCVAL El Camino Division (5-2 overall) and kept alive its chance for a Central Coast Section playoff berth.

Pets are personal with this store owner

The term “supply” doesn’t begin to describe the offerings at Crosbie’s Pet Supply store at Loyola Corners. The shop stocks what most of the larger pet stores can’t - an owner, Lyla Crosbie, who cares for customers’ pets as if they were her own and provides a sense of trust and friendship.

“We’re not a really fancy store, we just supply basic stuff that people need for their pets,” said Crosbie. But she makes sure the basic stuff includes crickets for lizards and mice for snakes as well as pet food for the more common cats, dogs, birds and fish. The store also offers services such as grooming for dogs and cats and finding homes for abandoned animals.

Leo Long earns local honors

In the April 30 issue of the Town Crier, you were right to congratulate and thank Dick Henning from Foothill College for four decades of service to the community. I met him at Foothill as student body president more years ago than I’ll admit. Great guy.
