Los Altos banks were hit by two robberies in less than four days this past week.

A white male suspect robbed the Bank of the West, 176 Main St., Monday afternoon, getting away with an undisclosed amount of cash. Police said the suspect, described as 6-feet-1, wearing knee-length shorts and tennis shoes, gave a note to a bank teller demanding cash. The money was placed in a bag the suspect carried into the bank. He fled through the back of the building.

Police also are looking for two suspects in a bank robbery that occurred late Friday afternoon at the Loyola Corners shopping district in Los Altos.

Two suspects armed with handguns robbed the Bank of America at 901 Fremont Ave., just before its 6 p.m. closing. Police said the suspects jumped over the counter and demanded cash from the tellers. Police said no customers were in the bank at the time of the robbery.

The suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, taking off in a small black vehicle traveling westbound on Fremont Avenue, police said.

Police spokesman John Hughmanick said there is a possible connection between Friday’s suspects and those involved in a Monday robbery at a Bank of America branch located on North De Anza Boulevard in San Jose.

Hughmanick described Friday’s robbery as a “takeover style” heist, with a gun pressed against the head of one of the employees.

Both suspects are described as white males, late-teens to early 20s, approximately 5-foot-4 to 5-foot-7 and 140-150 pounds. They wore white hooded sweat shirts, dark pants and had masks over their faces, according to witnesses. The suspects’ vehicle is described as a late-model Honda 2-door, black, with tinted rear windows and the license plates removed. Anyone with information is asked to call Los Altos police at 947-2700.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
