Just last issue, we suggested challengers would have a tough time making a case for change on the El Camino Hospital District Board of Directors. After interviewing all the candidates, we still feel that way.

The hospital has the healthiest bottom line in its 42-year history. It has achieved this without compromising quality patient care, and surveys continue to show very high satisfaction ratings among patients, doctors and hospital workers.

Incumbents Mark O’Connor and David Reeder have been a part of this success. Their strong leadership and planning abilities have contributed to a strong board that should not change its membership at this critical stage. The board has the imminent challenge of rebuilding of the hospital tower.

Challengers Bill James and Linda Ferrer have solid platforms and would be capable board members. However, the incumbents add considerable depth of understanding of hospital issues through years of experience.

O’Connor isn’t afraid to ask hard questions. Reeder has benefited from experience as a Los Altos City Councilman to examine issues effectively. The incumbents are our clear choice.
