By Astronomy lecture at Foothill College

Astronomer Leo Blitz from the University of California, Berkeley, is scheduled to present “The Making of the Milky Way: Survival of the Fittest,” an illustrated non-technical lecture, 7-8:30 p.m., tonight, at the Smithwick Theater at Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. Visitors must purchase a campus parking permit for $2. No science background is required and the lecture is appropriate for ages 13 and up.

The lecture will discuss how the Milky Way galaxy was formed and continues to form from smaller groupings of star and cosmic raw material.

Springer School walk-a-thon

Springer School has scheduled its annual walk-a-thon fund-raiser, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 12, at the Covington School site, 201 Covington Road. Students are sponsored for each quarter of a mile they walk. A silent auction and music played by a disc jockey are scheduled.

Foothill College flea market

The monthly flea market sponsored by Foothill College, to benefit Foothill Music Theater, is scheduled 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Oct. 19, in parking lot 7. Foothill College is located at 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend. Visitors must purchase a parking permit for $2.

Puppet-play workshop at Foothill College

“From the Picture Book Page to the Puppet Stage,” a audience-participation puppet show featuring acclaimed puppeteer Ingrid Crepeau, has been scheduled 2 p.m., November 3, at Smithwick Theater at Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills. Tickets are $6 in advance or $8 at the door for children under 12, and $10 advanced, $12 at the door for adults. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 969-9506. MVHS SAT II Workshop

An SAT II writing and Math IC Workshop has been scheduled for Mountain View High School juniors and seniors, 7-9 p.m., Oct. 22, 24, 29, 31, in Room 105-107. Students are asked to bring a pen, pencil and calculator. The fee for the workshop is $70. Students need to bring the registration form and a check payable to MVHS Tutorial Center to the Tutorial Center by Oct. 15. For more information, call George St. Clair at 940-4624.

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
