Boys water polo
Gunn went to 3-0 in the De Anza Division with a 9-7 home win over Monta Vista Oct. 2. Siddharth Menon scored five goals and Paul Esber had 11 saves.
Girls water polo
Behind five goals each from Evelyn Nelson and Katy Manning, Homestead sunk Santa Clara 17-8 Thursday to improve to 3-2 in the El Camino Division.
Cross country
Mountain View’s Jeff Audett took 45th in the boys varsity race at the Artichoke Invitational in Half Moon Bay. The senior clocked in at 13 minutes, 20 seconds to equal the school record set earlier Saturday by sophomore Mike Somoff. Fara Husain ran a career-best on the course (16:20 ) for 49th in the varsity girls race.
Field hockey
St. Francis High’s reign as the nation’s No. 1-ranked girls volleyball team is all but over.
A five-game loss at last weekend’s Mitty Invitational tarnished the Lancers’ perfect record and surely will drop them from the top spot when Student Sports magazine releases its next rankings.
Host Mitty defeated St. Francis 16-14, 15-12, 8-15, 8-15, 15-9 in Saturday’s championship match. Mitty, ranked third nationally, improved to 13-1; the Lancers fell to 8-1.
In other volleyball action last week:
Los Altos swept host Gunn 15-3, 15-6, 15-11 Thursday in an SCVAL De Anza Division match. Ashley Watson and Allie Miller led the Eagles (3-1, 7-6) with six kills each, while setter Michelle Nelson had 22 assists.
Two days prior at Los Gatos, Los Altos lost in straight games. “(The) Los Gatos attack proved to be a bit too much for Los Altos,” Eagles coach Dave Winn said.
Mountain View beat Pinewood 15-6, 12-15, 16-14, 15-8 Thursday in a non-league match. Mountain View coach Gerrie Phillips said, “Colleen Nicholls was the big force in the middle,” tallying 17 kills and two blocks. Sariah Alcaraz added 11 kills and 17 digs, while Erin McConnell had 12 kills and Colleen Schumacher 10. Abby Damm had 47 assists.
Anna Tracey (13 kills) and Brett Smith-Hams (11) led Pinewood.
Los Altos’ Jooske DeGroot was voted the top defensive player at Saturday’s Davis Tournament, which the Eagles won.
