Downtown Los Altos will host its annual Halloween Spooktacular Oct. 31, featuring free entertainment, trick-or-treating, contests and a performance by the Egan Intermediate School Music Department. The event will take place in the Community Plaza on Main and State streets.

The Spooktacular will feature trick-or-treating at the stores in downtown Los Altos, with entertainment for costumed children from noon to 3:30 p.m.

The Egan students will begin their performance at 3 p.m. There will also be a candy corn guessing contest and raffle.

Beth Miller of Marion Jackston and Leslie Chiaverini of Adventure Toys are sponsoring 5×7 pictures of children in their Halloween costumes, 1-4 p.m., in the Community Plaza.

The costume contest will begin at 4 p.m., with prizes awarded for the most creative costumes in three age categories: 3 years and younger, 4 to 6 years, and 7 to 10 years.

Local merchants will provide prizes for the costume contest and raffle. The grand prize winner will receive a $50 savings bond from Bank of the West.

Trick-or-treat bags will be provided by the Los Altos American Legion Post, and students from local schools will assist the children with stickers and removable tattoos.

Adding to the festivities is the Los Altos Recreation Department, which is co-sponsoring the decoration of downtown store windows by local students.

The performing Egan students make up 38 percent of the student body. The music department consists of a seventh-grade band, an eighth-grade band, a seventh-grade orchestra, an eighth-grade orchestra and a chorus made up of seventh- and eighth-grade students.

Concerts are given throughout the school year for students, parents and the community, including the Spooktacular.

Each spring, the music students travel to Disneyland to perform and participate in Magic Music Days.

The Spooktacular is sponsored by the Los Altos Village Association and the Los Altos Town Crier.
