TheatreWorks, by special arrangement with Matt Salinger, will be America’s first regional theater to present playwright Pamela Gien’s “The Syringa Tree” since its OBIE award winning Off-Broadway run.

The play, to be performed at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro St., will preview at 8 p.m. tonight, Thursday and Friday. It opens at 8 p.m., Saturday, and runs through Nov. 2.

Directed by Larry Moss of Los Angeles, who was instrumental in the original development of this work, “The Syringa Tree” is told through the voice of a child trying to make sense of the chaos, magic and darkness of Johannesburg during the days of apartheid.

This personal solo piece stars Gin Hammond and Eva Kaminsky who will alternate performances in bringing this story to life.

Gin Hammond performed in “Polk Country” at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C.; Eva Kaminsky appeared in “The London Cuckholds” at Blue Herron/Protean Theater.

Larry Moss of Los Angeles, who was instrumental in the original development of this work, is directing.

The performance schedule is as follows: 7:30 p.m., Tuesdays (no show Oct. 29); 8 p.m., Wednesdays through Saturdays; 2 p.m., Saturdays, Oct. 26 and Nov. 2; 2 p.m., Sundays; and 7 p.m., Sundays, Oct. 20 and 27.

Tickets are $20-$43, with discounts available for youth, students, seniors and members.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
