Library News

October events at the Los Altos main library

County Librarian Susan Fuller retired from the Santa Clara County Library System at the end of September.

Fuller began her career as a children’s librarian with the county and worked at several branches, including Los Altos. Following a brief period with the San Jose Public Library, in 1985 she returned to the Santa Clara system as county librarian.

The staffs of the Los Altos and Woodland branch libraries said Fuller brought warmth, compassion and an unceasing dedication to protecting open access to all citizens, including children, to her positions.

Library Journal, the premier national journal for libraries, named her “Librarian of the Year” in 1998: “A rare one-two punch of principles, integrity and practical political skills makes Fuller a compelling and successful leader.”

Under Fuller’s leadership, the Santa Clara County Library increased its circulation from 2.5 million items a year to just under 8.5 million last year.

The library system has been repeatedly recognized as one of the top public library systems in the United States.
