Local high school sports soon will be broadcast on Los Altos public access television. The Los Altos City Council on Sept. 24 agreed to appropriate $6,300 to the cable TV budget to purchase equipment for airing games on Los Altos Government Access (channel 18). Teams from Los Altos, Mountain View and St. Francis highs will be featured.

Play ball

Mountain View-Los Altos Babe Ruth holds sign-ups for its spring leagues 6-7 p.m., Saturdays, through Oct. 26. The baseball league is for players 13-18. Registration is held at the scorer’s booth at McKelvey Ballpark in Mountain View. The early-bird price (through Dec. 31) for 20 spring games, plus all-stars, is $73 for ages 13-15 and $84 for ages 16-18. For more information, call 966-8027.

Call for coaches

Los Altos High seeks a co-head coach for gymnastics, an assistant coach for varsity softball and a head coach for junior-varsity softball. If interested, call Los Altos athletic director Monica Lodge at 960-8857.

Getting grants

The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame recently made available its 2003 Youth Fund grant applications. Non-profit Sec. 501(c) (3) youth organizations and schools may apply for these grants, which provide needed sports equipment. The deadline for returning completed applications is Jan. 31; grants will be distributed next summer. For a grant application, call (415) 352-8827.

Runners wanted

The Palo Alto Lightning Track and Field Club seeks runners to join its cross-country program, which starts this month. For more information, call coach Willie Young at 321-2175.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
