Town Crier Staff Report

The Mountain View High football team last Friday defeated an upper-division opponent for the second-straight week, routing Palo Alto 32-11.

The Spartans, who handled Saratoga 35-20 the prior week, are now 3-0.

Mountain View got off to a fast start against Paly (1-2), as Cody Himes returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown..

Himes later caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Sean Manson and finished with four receptions for 104 yards.

Manson completed 15 of his 20 passes for 238 yards in a game played at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills..

The Spartans, who led 18-3 at the half, also hurt the Vikings on the ground. Mountain View scored three rushing TDs, courtesy of Kalani Bounos (10 yards), Guillermo Moreira (2) and Manson (1), respectively.

Defensively, Spartan junior Danny Croom registered two sacks for the second game in a row.

Mountain View opens SCVAL El Camino Division action Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. game against Homestead at Sunnyvale’s Fremont High.

Gunn 56, Lynbrook 21

Gunn also went to 3-0 on the season, dismantling Lynbrook in a non-league game last Friday.

The Titans jumped out to a 36-0 halftime advantage and did not allow the Vikings to score until the fourth quarter.

Utilizing a balanced attack, Gunn piled up 402 yards of offense.

Quarterback Doug Campbell completed 13 of 27 passes for 233 yards and a touchdown. Five of his completions went to Phil Ghilarducci, who racked up 100 yards receiving.

The Titans gained 156 yards rushing, led by Marlo Jenkins’ 71 yards and two TDS. Darius Johnson also scored twice on runs.

Kevin Gordon reached the end zone on a 9-yard run and an 88-yard kick return.

Gunn begins SCVAL De Anza Division play Friday with 7:30 p.m. contest at Wilcox.

Homestead 21, Wilcox 20

Craig Maynard’s 1-yard keeper with 50 seconds left, followed by Eric Dodge’s extra point, lifted Homestead to a non-league win over Wilcox last Friday.

Maynard had a hand in all three TDs for the visiting Mustangs (2-1). Prior to his short scoring run, the senior tossed a pair of scoring strikes - including a 57-yarder - to receiver Garren Strong.

Wilcox (0-3) threatened to recapture the lead in the game’s final moments with a long throw into the end zone, but Homestead’s Eddie Sumpter broke it up.

Milpitas 40, Los Altos 7

Los Altos sunk to 1-2 on the season last Friday with a non-league loss at Milpitas (3-0), a team ranked ninth in the Central Coast Section.

The Eagles start their El Camino Division slate Friday by traveling to Sunnyvale to play Fremont at 7:30 p.m.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
