The Mountain View High School Spartan Marching Band and color guard has scheduled a preview performance of its field show, “Bella Mangione,” featuring the music of Chuck Mangione, 4 p.m., Saturday, at the MVHS outdoor stadium, 3535 Truman Ave.

Admission is free and the community is invited, as a thank-you to the community for its support. The event marks the beginning of the new season, with the band in full uniform for the first time. The performance caps an all-day March-a-thon fund-raiser for the band.

St. Francis dedicates new building

St. Francis High School dedicated its new building, Andre Hall, Sept. 29. The Andre Hall project including the student plaza and the St. Joseph Prayer Garden completes the final phase of “Vision and Learning,” the Campaign for St. Francis High School. The hall houses state-of-the-art classrooms and technology labs, the Almon Communications Center and the Lawson Media Center.

Springer School walk-a-thon

Springer School has scheduled its annual walk-a-thon fund-raiser 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 12, at the Covington School site, 201 Covington Road. Students are sponsored for each quarter of a mile they walk. A silent auction and music played by a disc jockey are scheduled.

MVHS benefit garage sale

A garage sale to benefit the Mountain View High School music program has been scheduled 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, in the parking lot on Truman and Bryant streets. Donations are welcome. Please drop them off 5-9 p.m., Friday.

Foothill College flea market

The monthly flea market sponsored by Foothill College, to benefit Foothill Music Theater, is scheduled 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Oct. 19, in parking lot 7. Foothill College is located at 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend. Visitors must purchase a parking permit for $2.

Los Altos Kiwanis Club hosts educators

The Los Altos Kiwanis Club will focus on local education the next two weeks. On Oct. 8th, Rich Fischer, Superintendent of the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District will speak to the club. On Oct. 15th, Marge Gratiot, superintendent of the Los Altos School District will address the club.

Both administrators will discuss the state of educational programs, construction and finances.

The Kiwanis club meets every Tuesday at noon at the Garden House in Shoup Park.

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
