Town Crier Staff Report

For the second time this season, Los Altos High fell to St. Francis by a goal in boys water polo.

The host Eagles lost 11-10 on Sept. 25; they dropped a 10-9 decision to the Lancers the prior week.

In the most recent non-league meeting between the two local rivals, Los Altos (6-4) received three-goal performances from both Brian Whitlock and Kent Healy. St. Francis (8-2) countered with four goals from Jeff Lipinski and two each by Will Whitney and David Welch.

When the teams met Sept. 21 in the third-place game of the Scott Roche Tournament, the Eagles jumped out to a 4-1 lead, then watched the Lancers steadily gain momentum and eventually control of the contest.

Both teams play in - and host - the St. Francis Tournament this weekend, starting on Friday.

Mountain View High’s Matt Ronconi set a new school record at last Saturday’s Stanford Invitational, running the course in 17 minutes, 45 seconds to finish in 104th place. Fellow senior Jeff Audett also beat the previous school record with his run of 17:53 (112th).

In the girls race, senior Emilie Doolittle posted her best-ever performance on the Stanford Course - by 1:47 - with a run of 22:24 (153rd).

On Sept. 24, Los Altos High competed in the Central Park Invitational on a 2.3-mile course at Central Park in Santa Clara.

The boys varsity took second out of 13 schools in the team competition, with four runners earning medals for finishing among the top 20 individuals. They included Jeremy Taylor (second, 12:21), Taff Dirks (third, 12:22), Andrew Buysse (sixth, 12:33), and Miles Prowse (13th, 12:51).

The Los Altos girls placed seventh in their team competition. They were led by medal-winner Laura Perry, who finished in 17th place (15:47).

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
