MV whips Willow Glen

Mountain View High kicked off its season with a 28-6 win over host Willow Glen Friday at PAL Stadium.

Quarterback Sean Manson sparked the Spartans with three touchdown passes and completed 11 of his 16 throws for 218 yards.

Wide out Jeff Eckenhoff was on the receiving end of two of Manson’s touchdown tosses, scoring on plays of 52 and 20 yards. Tight end Brad Read made a 4-yard touchdown reception and fullback Guillermo Moreira accounted for Mountain View’s other score with a 2-yard run.

The Spartans host Saratoga at 3:15 p.m., Friday.

Mustangs run past Paly

Aided by eight Oak Grove turnovers, the St. Francis High football team opened its season with a 28-0 win last Friday at home.

This marked the first time the Lancers have shutout Oak Grove (1-1) since the 1992 Central Coast Section title game.

Host St. Francis rushed for 149 yards, the majority of them courtesy of Will Taufoou. The junior running back accounted for three touchdowns, including a 26-yarder.

Daniel Descalso scored the Lancers’ other touchdown by returning a fumble 50 yards.

St. Francis entertains Los Gatos (1-0) at 7:30 p.m., Friday, in another non-league contest.

Homestead ran for 274 yards Saturday in a 26-14 non-league win over visiting Palo Alto.

Mustangs halfback Will Faules rushed for a pair of touchdowns, including a 30-yard burst early in the fourth quarter that put his team ahead for good. The senior finished with 91 yards on 14 carries.

Homestead also received strong running from Ramont Thomas (8-67, TD) and Brian McGee (10-103).

Garren Strong scored a touchdown as well, grabbing an 11-yard pass from Craig Maynard.

Homestead hosts Gunn (1-0) at 7:30 p.m., Friday, at Fremont.

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
