Several Los Altos area ceremonies are planned for today paying tribute to the victims of 9/11 while taking stock in the nation and its law enforcement that ensures safety.

The city of Los Altos has scheduled a dedication ceremony at 12:30 p.m. for Patriot Corner, a Shoup Park picnic area the city has renamed to honor the heroes and victims of 9/11.

The ceremony will include comments by members of the Los Altos City Council and a moment of silence in remembrance of the victims of the terrorist attacks last Sept. 11. A commemorative plaque will be unveiled at the site and refreshments will be served following the ceremony.

In addition, a group of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills residents has joined forces to organize “Remembering 9/11″ a ceremony, scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Hillview soccer field, 97 Hillview Ave. This ceremony will include a salute to local law enforcement with Los Altos Police Chief Don Johnson and Ben Lopes, Santa Clara County Fire Department chief, both on hand. For more on the event, see the detailed announcement on Page 18 of this issue.

The city of Mountain View also is commemorating the one-year anniversary of the tragedies with a tree planting and memorial plaque unveiling, set for 12:50 p.m. in Pioneer Park. The park is located at 1146 Church St. Prior to the ceremony, TheatreWorks members will present “A Light Ahead,” a program of readings, poems, essays and songs celebrating the American spirit. This program will begin at noon in the outdoor ParkStage next to the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro St.

Local churches are holding commemorative services open to the public.

The sanctuary at Los Altos United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Ave., will feature the Chancel Choir and organist Larry Crummer joining pastors in a 7:30 p.m. service of music and messages for remembrance. The First Presbyterian Church of Mountain View’s 9/11 service begins at 7 p.m., with Scouts presenting a color guard to place the flag. The church is located at 1667 Miramonte Ave.

Congregation Beth Am of Los Altos Hills, Foothills Congregational and Los Altos First Baptist are among the local churches holding special services today. For more information, see the story on Page 7.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
