By Foothills Congregational to host talk Stasek
An ice-cream social followed by a talk by Mountain View City Councilwoman Rosemary Stasek will be held 7-9 p.m., Sept. 16, at Foothills Congregational Church, 461 Orange Ave., Los Altos. Co-sponsors are the church and the Los Altos/Mountain View League of Women Voters.
Stasek will share her insights on the social and political issues facing Afghanistan, based on her visit there in May as a member of a delegation of Afghan-Americans looking at the problems of reconstruction. Her comments will include personal experiences of life in post-Taliban Afghanistan.
The meeting, in the Parish Hall, is open to the public.
Genealogy classes for seniors
Family history and genealogy classes, sponsored by Los Altos-Mountain View Adult Education, will be offered at the Los Altos Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave.
The beginners class, to be held 9-11:30 a.m., Sept. 18, is designed for those who want to start tracing their family heritage.
The intermediate class, for those who already have the basic research skills and wish to continue researching their family heritage, will be held at the community center 12:30-3 p.m. tomorrow.

Partners for New Generations needs mentors. Environment expert to talk on recycling
The Technology and Society Committee’s biweekly Luncheon Speaker Series meeting will be held 11:45 a.m., Tuesday, at the Golden Wok Restaurant, 895 Villa St., Mountain View. Roberta Dunlap, environmental services specialist with the city of San Jose, will describe the new technology being used for the city’s curbside recycling program. Professional photographer David Linnig is scheduled to hold a workshop for young photographers ages 9-13 at 1-4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, at Hidden Villa Farm, 26870 Moody Road, Los Altos Hills. Linnig will offer instruction on subject matter, composition and exposure control.

Group leaving for Syktyvkar

Open space district holds summer events
Families eager to explore the outdoors together can participate in the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District’s “Family Fun” events. September events are “Insect Prowl” 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, and “Nature Arts and Crafts” 10 a.m. to noon, Sept. 28.
It is recommended that participants dress in layers and carry water bottles. The Nature Center is near the intersection of Page Mill Road and Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35).
