By LAH resident leads choral groups in salute to 9

Los Altos Hills resident Charlene Archibeque is leading the San Jose State Choraliers, The Choral Project, the San Jose Chamber Orchestra and the American Beethoven Society in a concert, “Remembering Voices,” honoring Sept. 11 victims on the one-year anniversary of the infamous terrorist attacks.

The concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., at Mission Santa Clara, on the campus of Santa Clara University, 500 El Camino Real.

Archibeque, along with conductors Daniel Hughes and Barbara Day Turner, has selected a series of compositions that evoke a sense of spiritual comfort and healing in memory of those who died Sept. 11.

The centerpiece of the evening is the Requiem of Gabriel Fauré, his best-known choral work.

Tickets are $25 preferred seating, $15 general, $10 students. Tickets may be purchased by calling (866) 468-3399 or logging on to www.TicketWeb.com.

Schola Cantorum memorial service

Mountain View-based Schola Cantorum, in conjunction with the Office for Religious Life at Stanford University, will commemorate the 9/11 tragedy with a community sing-along of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s timeless Requiem on beginning at 8:46 a.m. today in the Stanford Memorial Church on the Stanford University campus.

Schola Cantorum is part of a worldwide choral commemoration of all those lost their lives and those who helped others on 9/11.

Performances of the Requiem will be held in every time zone beginning at 8:46 a.m., the time of the first attack on the World Trade Center.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
