By Hotel project on agenda

The Los Altos City Council is scheduled to look at alternative hotel plans for the city-owned property on First and Main streets Sept. 24 at the request of Councilman King Lear.

Los Altos city officials have been negotiating with developer Roxy Rapp behind closed doors since last fall to develop a draft development plan that would place a two-story boutique hotel on the site.

Neither side had struck a deal when the negotiation period expired June 1, though city officials said they planned to continue working with Rapp.

King suggested that the council reconsider one of the hotel proposals that it turned down when members selected Rapp last year.

Two-alarm fire damages hall

Los Altos

A two-alarm fire damaged the Fraternal Order of the Eagles meeting hall in downtown Mountain View Aug. 25, causing an estimated $50,000 in damages.

A resident reported smelling smoke from the 100 block of Castro Street at 11:15 a.m. and called 911, a spokesman said.

Firefighters contained and extinguished the blaze within 30 minutes.

Due to the large number of residents in the area attending the nearby Mountain View Farmers’ Market, Los Altos and Palo Alto firefighters were called to help extinguish the flames.

No neighboring businesses sustained any damage, the spokesman said. He reported no injuries.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation last week.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
