Stephanie Fong of Los Altos recently capped a stellar tennis career at Amherst College in Mass.

Fong last spring was named NCAA Division III All-American by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

As Amherst’s senior co-captain, she led her team to the Northeast Regional title in 2002 and its fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Elite Eight at Sweetbriar College, Va. There, Amherst fell to Emory University in the national quarterfinals.

Fong finished her career as one of the most decorated tennis players in school history. She helped the Jeffs win their only NCAA crown in any sport in 1999 and reach the NCAA Final Four in ‘00 and ‘01.

The 1998 Mountain View High graduate was tabbed Second-Team All NESCAC this past season; she earned First Team honors as a junior.

Fong was also an NESCAC Spring All-Academic selection in ‘02 and qualified for both the NCAA singles and doubles championships. She finished the season ranked ninth nationally and fourth in the Northeast in singles, according to ITA rankings. Fong and doubles partner Heather Cole were rated 13th nationally and second in the Northeast as a duo.

Fong graduated from Amherst magna cum laude and plans to attend the University of California at Davis Law School this fall.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
