The Los Altos City Council approved city participation by helping to fund next week’s “Remembering 9/11″ communitywide event scheduled for the Hillview Soccer Field.

The motion to provide a $500 grant was approved 4-0; Councilman King Lear abstained from the vote because he said he does not believe in memorials.

The council majority followed the lead of the Los Altos Hills council which earlier had unanimously approved a similar grant for the patriotic event.

The program on Sept. 11 has gained support from local service clubs as well. Funds are needed to rent chairs, staging and other supplies.

All residents of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills are welcome to the combined event. For details, see the story on page 17.

Seating begins at 5:45 p.m., with the event starting promptly at 6:20 p.m.
