By 'Rock Back the Clock'

Get ready for the 14th annual “Rock Back the Clock” family street dance scheduled 6-10 p.m., Friday, at Rancho Shopping Center, Foothill Expressway and Springer Road in Los Altos.

The event provides an inexpensive evening for the family, with the kids dancing and hula-hooping their hearts out to 1950s hit songs.

The Rancho Merchants Association hosts Rock Back the Clock and proceeds benefit the Los Altos Festival of Lights parade held in downtown Los Altos every Thanksgiving weekend.

Admission is $5 per person; those under 18 will be admitted if accompanied by an adult.

Explore ‘Eternal Egypt’ Tuesday

Nearly 150 objects, many never before shown outside the British Museum, are on view at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor through Nov. 11.

Fine Arts Museum docent Connie Ewy will discuss the exhibit which features three millennia of colossal stone fragments, papyri, mummy masks, jewelry and intricate inscriptions 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, in the Hillview Community Center Multipurpose Room, 97 Hillview Ave. in Los Altos. The Eternal Egypt lecture, sponsored by the Friends of the Los Altos Library, is free and open to the public.

Los Altos Art Docents

Los Altos Art Docents are seeking volunteers to assist in their program.

Trainees will be part of a five-month, hands-on learning process. At the conclusion of the training, volunteers will be part of a a team of docents bringing more than 40 varied and fun units of arts into the Los Altos School District K-8 classrooms.

Some of the lessons offered include art appreciation, clay work, painting and graphic design.

Chefs Who Care at Clarke’s

The Chefs Who Care September dinner is scheduled for Tuesday at Clarke’s Charcoal Broiler at Rancho Shopping Center, Springer and Foothill Expressway, Los Altos. Seatings are 5:30 p.m and 7 p.m.

Prepaid by Sept. 5, costs are $22 for adults; $12 for children 6-12. Prices at the door are $24, adults, $14 children. Make reservations for Visa/MasterCard by calling 961-3584.

Chefs Who Care is a program of the Community Services Agency. Half of the dinner cost is donated to the agency’s Food and Nutrition Center and is tax deductible.

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
