By CSMA open house and groundbreaking

The Community School of Music and Arts in Mountain View has scheduled an open house 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sept. 7, at 220 View St.

CSMA has also scheduled a groundbreaking Sept. 21 for its new $11 million campus scheduled to open in January 2004.

The school needs to raise an additional $4 million for the project. The new facility will be built on a 1.6-acre site at San Antonio Circle, Mountain View.

Once complete, the center will have 17 music studios, ceramics studios, art and music classrooms, a 200-seat concert hall and a digital arts/electronic music room.

Student, parent orientation at Foothill

Parents of new Foothill College students are invited to student orientation 6-8:30 p.m., Sept. 18, in Appreciation Hall, Room 1501.

Parents will have an opportunity to meet with Foothill faculty, counselors and staff. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. To R.S.V.P., call 949-7366.

Center for innovation to open Sept. 14

The Krause Center for Innovation at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills is scheduled to celebrate its grand opening 9:30-11 a.m., Sept. 14, on campus at 12345 El Monte Road. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.

The center is a regional training center for teachers, kindergarten through the first two years of community college. The center also houses 18,000 square feet of computer labs, teaching space, a digital art gallery and a cyber cafe.

Construction bids for Springer, Almond

The Los Altos School District Board of Trustees accepted construction bids for Almond and Springer school renovation, Aug. 20.

The total for both schools, bid as one package, is $12,842,000.

The district used the model for bidding recommended by the Construction Oversight Committee. The construction management firm, Blach Construction Company, will manage the construction. The bidding was done by trade, and the board approved the low bid for each of the trades. The district hopes to have both school sites renovated by next summer.

Study abroad with Foothill College

Spend Fall Quarter 2002 in exciting London, England, when you participate in the Foothill College Campus Abroad Program Oct. 11 through Dec. 7. The approximate cost excluding air fare is $3,000. The program includes a series of interdisciplinary lectures on British life and culture. Participants will take field trips to a variety of attractions.

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
