Cellist Albert Hwang, a student at Los Altos High School, will be a soloist at Saturday’s 13th annual Korean-American Music Supporters Association’s Youth Symphony Concert.

The concert is scheduled for 8 p.m., in the Spangenberg Theater at Gunn High School, 780 Arastradero Road, Palo Alto.

The KAMSA concert program, conducted by maestro James J. Song, also will include a solo performance by violinist Anna Chang.

The program features Bernstein’s “Overture to Candide,” Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait and Rodeo Suite,” Barber’s “Adagio for Strings,” Beethoven’s “Romance in F major,” and Saint-Saens’ “Cello Concerto No 1.”

Hwang, 16, recently won the Korean-American Music Supporters’ Association 2002 Young Artists Competition.

He began playing the cello at age 6. Since then, he has been a member of the California Youth symphony, the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra and has been principal cellist of the KAMSA Youth Symphony for the past three years.

Previously, Hwang won the Nova Vista Symphony 2002 Young Artists Competition and the San Jose Youth Symphony 2002 Young Artists Competition He also was a prize winner at the Fremont Symphony 2000 Young Artists Competition.

The KAMSA is a non-profit volunteer organization based in the Bay Area that was founded in 1989. Its primary purpose is to promote the careers of young musicians.

Tickets to Saturday’s concert are $10.

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
