By Photography class for children

Professional photographer David Linnig is scheduled to hold a workshop for young photographers 9-13, 1-4 p.m., Sept. 14 and 15, at Hidden Villa Farm, 26870 Moody Road, Los Altos Hills. Linnig will offer instruction on subject matter, composition and exposure control, in addition to individual critiques, with time for taking photos.

‘Green Foothills’ to celebrate 40 years

The Committee for Green Foothills is scheduled to celebrate 40 years of advocacy and education to protect open space at the “Umbrellas Over Time” auction and dinner Sept. 8 at Ridge Vineyards atop Montebello Ridge. The event is intended to raise awareness of and support for the Committee for Green Foothills’ programs that improve the beauty and quality of life on the Peninsula.

State Senators Byron Sher and Jackie Speier will be among the political leaders scheduled to serve as auctioneers. Auction items include two signed Ansel Adams photographs and Wallace Stegner’s famous sweater.

The event will feature dinner and wine tasting.

Organizers expect more than 300 guests.

The Committee for Green Foothills is a regional grass-roots organization working to establish and maintain land-use policies that protect the environment throughout San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. It was established in 1962.

Sustainable building tour at Hidden Villa

Hidden Villa Farm and Wilderness Preserve is offering a Sustainable Building Tour 3-5 p.m., Sept. 1. The building is the newest structure at Hidden Villa and features solar electricity and hot water, a geothermal heat pump, passive solar design, and straw-bale and rammed-earth construction.

The tour lasts 1.5 hours and is not recommended for children under 12.

Hidden Villa is located at 26870 Moody Road, Los Altos Hills. The tour will be held rain or shine. Cost is $5 per person, and reservations are required. For more information, call 949-8646.

Volunteers needed for Partners in Caring

The Stanford University Chaplaincy Office invites volunteers to provide practical and emotional support to community members who are homebound. Opportunities include friendly visiting, essential transportation, shopping and meal assistance. Training and ongoing education are required. For more information, call 723-5101.

Golf croquet lessons in Los Altos Hills

Group leaving for Syktyvkar

Join a group from Los Altos on a trip to the sister city of Syktyvkar, Russia, leaving Oct. 3- 13. The group will be home-hosted while in Syktyvkar. They will also spend a few days in St. Petersburg and Moscow, where they will stay in Russian-style hotels.

Hidden Villa concert

Hidden Villa Farm, 26870 Moody Road, Los Altos Hills, will present a concert, “The Singing Environment with ZunZun,” 6-7:30 p.m., Sept. 8.

Explore the beauty of Columbia with El Pescador through the lively music of ZunZun. Bring a picnic dinner and a blanket or lawn chair. Refreshments will be sold.

Open space district holds summer events

Families eager to explore the outdoors together can participate in the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District’s “Family Fun” events.

Participants may enjoy nature hikes, hands-on outdoor activities and trips to the Nature Center, free of charge.

September events are “Insect Prowl” 10 a.m. to noon, Sept. 14, and “Nature Arts and Crafts” 10 a.m. to noon, Sept. 28.

The Nature Center is near the intersection of Page Mill Road and Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35).
