Town Crier Staff Report

Here’s how professional athletes from the area and their teams performed in recent weeks:

Joe Cannon - The St. Francis High graduate and current San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper on Aug. 3 appeared in his second Major League Soccer All-Star Game. He made a record eight saves to help the MLS All-Stars defeat the U.S. Men’s National Team 3-2. Cannon is now second on the all-time list for most all-star game saves.

Lorrie Fair - The Los Altos High grad’s Philadelphia Charge team (11-4-6) is headed to the Women’s United Soccer Association playoffs, despite a 2-0 loss to the Atlanta Beat last Saturday. Fair, a midfielder, almost earned an assist in the second half with a through pass to Marinette Pichon, but her shot sailed over the crossbar. The Charge enters this week’s playoff opener with a second-place mark of 11-4-6.

Ronnie Fair - Lorrie’s twin saw her WUSA season come to an end Saturday when her New York Power team fell 4-2 to the Washington Freedom. Midfielder Fair nearly scored a goal in the 60th minute on a blast from the top of the box that deflected to Emily Janss, who knocked it in. The Power finishes with a last-place record of 3-17-1.

John Gall - The St. Francis product raised his batting average to .320 by going 2 for 4 Saturday playing for the New Haven Ravens, a minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. The AA baseball team lost the game 6-3 to Portland, dropping its second-place record to 64-55.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
