By Elizabeth Manrao, Eran Tal and Melanie Charlotte Usas of Los Altos have been named to the President's Honors List at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Kenneth John Schweifler, son of Edwin and Kathy Schweifler of Los Altos, earned a doctorate in dental surgery with honors from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco.

Sharon Siegel has been named the Older Adult Learner of the Year for 2001-02 by the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District.

Rockwell Buonos of Mountain View High School and Carlos Campos of Los Altos High School were named May 2002 students of the month, Teresa Teng of Moffett High School was named June student of the month by the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District.

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
