By AARP driving courses scheduled

The next classes for AARP’s 55 Alive Mature Driving are scheduled for Aug. 6 and 8. The time for these classes is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. Cost for the class is $10 per person.

Classes are limited to 30 people, and fill up quickly. You may send your check payable to AARP, and dated for the first day of the class for which you are registering, to the Los Altos Senior Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos 94022.

Health insurance counseling

The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program is a non-profit consumer advocacy group that helps seniors and the disabled with Medicare, Medicare HMOs, and other related health insurance issues. HICAP counselor Roy Ito will be available at the Los Altos Senior Center on the third Tuesday of each month. Appointments are required.

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
