With eight-year Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District board member Sue Graham not seeking another four-year term, three board seats will be on the ballot this November.

Current board members David Williams and Judy Hannemann are seeking re-election, with newcomer Julia Rosenberg hoping to fill Graham’s seat.

No new candidates had filed by the time the Town Crier went to press. However, candidates have until Aug. 9 to file with the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters office.

Graham has taken on a new duty as president of the board of directors for The Community Health Awareness Council.

“While I have loved every minute of being on the board, it was time for me to move on to something new,” Graham said. “What I have learned from this experience is how great our school district is. I have come away from these eight years with a tremendous respect for the administration and teachers in this district.”

Williams, Hannemann and Rosenberg share those sentiments.

“Our comprehensive high schools are in the top 10th percentile in the state,” Williams, who has served on the board for the last four years, said. “We have a number of alternative programs in place to meet the needs of all of our students. Our adult education program serves many in our community. More students are gaining access to honors and Advanced Placement courses without diluting the rigor in our standard college prep courses.”

Graham said she is proud to be part of the district’s success over the past four years.

Hannemann views another term as an opportunity to see projects she has been involved with in the district through to the finish.

“As a Board member, I have had the challenge and the opportunity to build a new Adult Education facility, to pass a bond measure so that we could renovate and construct facilities for both Los Altos and Mountain View High Schools, and to carry on with regular educational programs while these projects were being completed,” Hannemann said. “Now we are moving on to finishing up so that our facilities can provide the quality programs our students need. I care very much about seeing these programs through to completion.”

For Rosenberg, currently serving her second term as the president of the Mountain View-Los Altos High School Foundation, running for school board seemed like the next step.

“I’ve been volunteering in our schools for nearly 15 years,” Rosenberg said. “When I learned that Sue Graham would be stepping down, I decided I was interested in taking my volunteerism at the schools to the next level.”

Rosenberg has been serving as vice president of 6th District Parent Teacher’s Association of Santa Clara County, was the parent representative on the Los Altos High School Site council for the 2002-03 school year and has served on the PTAs at Springer Elementary and Blach Intermediate schools. She has two sons currently at Los Altos High School.
