After finishing as runner-up in the PONY Baseball Sectional Tournament, the Los Altos-Mountain View Pony Division All-Stars made a quick exit from last week’s NorCal Regional in Campbell.

The team of the 13-year-olds - coached by Scott Clarke and Aaron Tachibana - ended the season by dropping its initial two games of the double-elimination event. LA-MV fell 9-7 to Citrus Heights (9-7) and 6-4 to San Jose PAL.

Despite the defeats, the team received fine efforts from several players, including pitchers Evan Sanders and Kyle Tachibana. Standout hitters included Charles Hug, Matt Smith, Tachibana, Ricky Roy and Sam Kridl. Defensively, Chris James and AJ Rossi made several stellar plays in the outfield.

In other LA-MV PONY action last week:

The Colt Division (15-16) team finished second in the sectional at Santa Clara’s Washington Park, losing the championship game to Santa Clara No. 2. MV-LA has qualified for this week’s Regional at PAL Stadium in San Jose, however, and opens play at 7:30 p.m., today In the sectional, the team rebounded from a second-round loss by winning three straight games. MV-LA received solid pitching from Scott Naylor, Brandon Volcker, Ryan Lee, Dustin Johnson, Jon Warmbrodt and Rex Petrill. Lee, Petrill and Volcker also came through at the plate, as did Taylor Allen, Daniel Tugaw and Chris Sherrard. The team was coached by Larry Petrill, Jim Hallisey, and Dennis Volcker.

The Bronco (11-12) Division team was eliminated in the semifinals of the sectional in San Jose. The team followed wins over Blossom Valley No. 2 and Morgan Hill No. 2 with consecutive losses to Blossom Valley No. 1 and Morgan Hill No. 1. The MV-LA team was coached by Alan Huwe, Ken Treadwell and Dennis Jespersen.

The Mustang (9-10) Division team opened the sectional in San Jose with a 12-2 rout of Blossom Valley No. 2. MV-LA was led by the strong pitching of Chris Harper and Kyle Clevenger and the hitting of Shane Biglarderi (two doubles), Bradley Howard (double), and Riley Moran (double). The team - coached by Tom Davis, John DiCello, and Dan Clevenger - was scheduled to play a second-round game last Saturday.

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
