By Opportunity for seniors to visit New Mexico

Los Altos Senior Center and Mid-Peninsula Widows and Widowers are organizing a trip to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, Oct. 9-15.

Apart from attending the balloon festival and an evening of fireworks, tour members will visit the state capitol, the oldest inhabited village in the United States and Carlsbad Caverns. For more information, call the Los Altos Senior Center at 948-7483.

Driving classes for August

AARP 55 Alive Senior Driving Training classes for August will be held 6 p.m.-10 p.m., Aug. 5 and 7, at the Mountain View Senior Center, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Aug. 6 and 8, at the Los Altos Senior Center.

Both of the two-day classes must be attended to complete the course.

A $10 fee must be paid in advance to the appropriate Senior Center prior to the class. For information call Ted Carlson at (408) 730-5546.

Avenidas board gets four new members

The board of directors of Avenidas, a multiservice agency for seniors and their families, has elected four new officers and welcomed seven new members.

The officers are: Bill Floyd, board chairman; Fran Codispoti of Los Altos Hills, chairwoman-elect; Worth Ludwick, treasurer; and Lily Hurlimann, secretary.

Serving their first term from 2002 to 2005 are: Loren Brown, Joan Campbell, Michael Couch of Los Altos Hills, Peggy Dalal, Jerianne (Jeri) Foley, Bill Nichols and Joan Parker.

The Avenidas Board of Directors has 27 members, including officers.

Each year, Avenidas serves more than 5,000 seniors in southern San Mateo and northern Santa Clara counties through over 40 programs.

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
