The Palo Alto Chapter of the American Red Cross invites wine lovers and supporters to come and sample from more than 70 premier California wineries from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Aug. 17, when the chapter and Palo Alto’s MacArthur Park restaurant combine for the 21st annual MacArthur Park Wine Festival.

Proceeds from the event benefit the chapter, which also services Los Altos and Los Altos Hills.

This year’s festival also features an array of desserts, fresh fruit and MacArthur Park’s famous barbecue baby back ribs. An array of cheeses also will be provided to enhance the wine-tasting experience. Accompanying the fine dining will be live entertainment, courtesy of the bands Black Pearl, Lynch and Spanky & Littlejohn.

Festivities include a silent auction that features vintage wines and private winery tours.

Proceeds go to each of the 12 American Red Cross services which include international humanitarian service, armed forces emergency services, CPR and first aid training, AIDS/HIV education, swimming lessons, lifeguard and water safety programs, Safe Ride for High School Kids, disaster preparedness education, a homelessness prevention program and first aid for pets.

The event will be held at MacArthur Park, 27 University Ave., in Palo Alto. Festival tickets sell for $55 in advance or $65 at the door. To purchase tickets, call 688-0438.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
