Karie Bennett, the owner of Atelier beauty salon on State Street, is opening another location in Santana Row. The new store will open Friday.

“This past summer the Aveda Corporation called and presented me with an opportunity I have been working for my whole career,” Bennett said. “I’ve been a hair dresser for more than 20 years and I never dreamed of this chance to reach my goal in life.”

Bennett said Aveda believes in conducting business in a manner that protects the Earth, conserves resources and does not compromise the ability of future generations to sustain them.

The Aveda concept is connecting beauty, environment and well being.

The new venture on Santana Row in San Jose will be an Aveda concept salon, the same as the salon in Los Altos.

“A lot of the training and work of hiring has been done by the corporation before I take over the salon,” Bennett said.

“It’s a labor of love and I like the Aveda responsibilities that are presented to me.”

All new trainees receive training on salon marketing strategies, product knowledge and communication skills. Bennett is pleased that has been accomplished.

The Aveda mission serves as a catalyst for awareness and change at individual and collective levels.

Aveda supports values that cultivate a sustainable economy and culture. Salons are chemical free and only use renewable resources.

Although Bennett will be leaving Los Altos for her new venture, she will retain the State Street salon.

Fanya Schmidt, an Avida colorist, will take over some of the responsibilities of the salon.

Bennett had been working with 40 to 50 clients a week in Los Altos.

“I’m still going to be in the Bus Barn Follies. I wouldn’t miss that because it’s so much fun to sing and dance in front of the town’s residents and some of my customers.” Bennett said. “I started in Los Altos 21 years ago and just because I am opening a salon, the first of its kind, doesn’t mean I’m leaving forever. It’s local girl makes good.”

Bennett’s new location is 378 Santana Row, Suite 1120. For more information, call (408) 244-4222, or email

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
